 A new word of good character is emphasized in our district calendar each month.

Here at Jericho we focus on the district word as we present good character traits to the children through projects, lessons, assemblies, and other school-wide activities.

Each month our teachers and staff choose several “Students of the Month”.  These students are those who have shown certain character traits for that particular month.  The students will be recognized with  a special certificate delivered by the principal!

A description of the character word and what it looks like in our school is shared during morning announcements at the beginning of each new month. These announcements are designed to inspire students to think about the character trait of the month and how they can best demonstrate it here at school.

  

Good character is taught daily at Jericho through mini-lessons and examples.  The following are the words that are emphasized each month:

The word of the month for September is

Respect

Every human being, of whatever origin, of whatever station, deserves respect. We must each respect others even as we respect ourselves. ~U. Thant

Respect: To feel or show deferential regard for; esteem.  A feeling of appreciative, often deferential regard.  Polite expressions of consideration or deferenceto show or feel admiration for something or someone.

The word of the month for October is

Responsibility

If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.  ~Abigail Van Buren

Responsibility: Able to distinguish between right and wrong and to think and act rationally, and hence accountable for one's behavior.  Involving accountability, obligation, or duties.

The word of the month for November is

Citizenship

Citizenship: Good citizens understand that they have a responsibility to the community, environment and law.

Traits of good citizenship:

  • Being a good neighbor by caring about others.
  • Sharing your time and skills to the community to make it better, cleaner and safer.
  • Treat other people with respect and dignity.
  • Conserving resources by practicing the three R's: Reduce. Re-use. Recycle.
  • Staying informed on issues and voicing your opinions by voting.

 

The word of the month for December is

Cooperation

Cooperation is the thorough conviction that nobody can get there unless everybody gets there.  ~Virginia Burden

Cooperation: An act or instance of working or acting together for a common purpose or benefit; joint action.  More or less active assistance from a person, organization, etc.  An activity shared for mutual benefit.

Caring

Caring: Feeling and exhibiting concern and empathy for others; a strong positive emotion of regard and affection


 

The word of the month for February is

Honesty

Honesty:  refers to a facet of moral character and denotes positive, virtuous attributes such as integrity, truthfulness, and straightforwardness along with the absence of lying, cheating, or theft.

The word of the month for March is

   Perseverance

Perseverance: steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

Fairness

Fairness: Pleasing to the eye or mind especially because of fresh, charming, or flawless quality, superficially pleasing.  Not stormy or foul.  Marked by impartiality and honesty, free from self-interest, prejudice, or favoritism.

The word of the month for May is

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline: the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of your emotional state.  Imagine what you could accomplish if you could simply get yourself to follow through on your best intentions no matter what.  Self-discipline is the assertion of willpower over more base desires, and is usually understood to be a synonym of 'self control'.

Courage
